One person starts it, usually the child, the partner or the best friend who always ends up organising things. Everyone else writes in secret, so the 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th or 70th ends with a reveal nobody saw coming.

The Organizer picks the day and shares a private link with everyone who should be part of it, from the closest circle to the cousin who lives three time zones away.
Everyone writes in secret
Storytellers open the link, answer a few gentle prompts, and add a letter, a photo or a short voice note. Nobody needs to see what anyone else wrote, and nobody needs an account.
The book opens on the day
Every letter, photo and voice note is gathered into one letter-book, kept sealed until the moment it is handed over and opened for the first time.

People add what they would put in a card if a card had room: a letter about a memory only they have, a photo from years ago, or a voice note read out loud because some things land better spoken than written.
Every birthday Encore ends the same way: a single sitting where the letters, photos and voice notes arrive at once, and the room goes quiet while it plays.

30ths, 40ths, 50ths, 60ths and 70ths carry a different weight than the birthdays either side of them. There is usually a bigger guest list, a longer shared history, and more people who have been meaning to say something for years.
The first Encore ever made was for a 30th. In secret, 17 people wrote letters, and 126 photos and voice notes were added alongside them, all gathered without the birthday girl knowing a thing until the book opened in front of her.
That is the shape a milestone birthday Encore tends to take: not one big card everyone signs in a rush, but dozens of small, unhurried contributions from people who had the time to actually think about what they wanted to say.

How is this different from a card everyone signs?
A card gets one line from each person, written standing up at someone's desk. Encore gives each person their own space and a bit of time, so a letter can actually say something, and photos and voice notes can go alongside it. It also stays as a proper letter-book afterwards, not a card that ends up in a drawer.
How long does collecting take?
Most birthday Encores collect for two to six weeks before the day, though it can run shorter for a fast-approaching date. Gentle reminders go out to anyone who has not written yet, so nobody quietly misses the deadline.
What do people actually contribute?
A letter, a few photos, or a short voice note, and most people add more than one. The prompts are specific enough that nobody is left staring at a blank page wondering what to say.
Can friends overseas join?
Yes. Everything happens through a private link, so a friend on the other side of the world can write, upload photos and record a voice note as easily as someone sitting in the same city.
What happens on the day?
The recipient answers one small question only they would know, and the letter-book opens for the first time, usually with the people closest to them nearby. It opens with a candlelit count of everyone who took part, then moves through the letters, photos and voice notes one by one.
